Loss of Innocence

Remember when you were in kindergarten and your biggest worry was that the guy next to you stole your crayons? Those were the days.

We all wish we could turn back time for many reasons. I do it myself quite often - delving into the past to see if I can re-experience certain things. A reason that we reminisce so frequently is because things were so much simpler then. Pretty much up until high school, we all had it made. Free place to live. Free food. Friends that you got to see every day. Being able to participate in things you loved and actually had time for.

As we all know, a big fat dose of reality hits us right in the kisser when we're about 18. Our lives are turned upside down with monetary responsibility, moral obligations, and the horrifying fact that we don't have our mom's to tell us to eat our vegetables anymore. We have to do it with our own free will

We lose many things on our journey to adulthood, one of them being our overactive imagination. Being in the arts, I have been able to cling to this on a much larger level than many other I know and I'm thankful for that. Others aren't so lucky. Creativity inspires escapism at it's finest level and I believe so many more people would benefit from its influence not only on an observational level, but by participating in something creative. Write a song. Draw. Buy a coloring book and unleash your inner child once in a while. It not only helps relieve stress but you might also get a new decoration for your wall out of the deal.

I know that looking on the past is usually not recommended but there are some things we can gain from it. Looking at life through a different pair of goggles can be very relaxing. Taking some time to really embrace a younger mindset is not only good for relieving stress but also for simple relaxation. I think we can learn a lot from simply taking a step back and allowing the innocence of childhood to flow through us. At least for a little bit. Then we can get back to taxes or grocery shopping or whatever other horrifying adult responsibility we should actually be doing.
